The Economist role involves adding value to Frudata’s customers. The ideal candidate for this job will focus on interpreting information to provide practical, trend analyses input and strategic input to customers, and in the process efficiently managing large amounts of information that is always sensitive and confidential. The integrity of the information Frudata supply to its customers is based on accurate data which is the sole responsibility of the economists. The position is based at Frudata’s head-office in Tyger-waterfront, Tygervalley, Cape Town. Frudata was founded in 1998, with the vision to be the preferred agricultural business partner, in converting data to information, for the purpose of deriving intelligence from it, while ensuring happy customers, employees and shareholders.

The job responsibilities include:

Typical Job specification Survey Coordinator

The position of Survey Coordinator is based at the Head Office of Frudata SA in Tyger Waterfront, Tyger Valley, Cape Town. Frudata SA was founded in 1998, with the vision to be the preferred agricultural business partner in converting data to information for the purpose of deriving intelligence from it, while ensuring happy customers, employees and shareholders.
Frudata surveys include studies of regional fruit harvests where farm production results are compared to uniform independent norms as well as to other producers participating in the survey with the aim to help producers to improve profitability and productivity. Multiple surveys are conducted at the same time.

The Survey Coordinator role involves liaison with producers and associated external parties as well as internal staff while doing data collection, data validation, data processing, preparation of reports and presentations, keeping track and record of all information collated and disseminated and general administration.
The candidate working on and coordinating surveys needs to manage large amounts of information very efficiently, since the information is confidential and sensitive. The integrity of the information that Frudata collects and provides to customers is key in driving punctuality and quality.

The job responsibilities of a Survey Coordinator include:

  • Proper planning and coordination of what has to happen when to ensure that the surveys achieve the set deadlines of communication to customers
  • Chasing and following up on data required from customers to receive it in time
  • Preparing electronic data storage files for easy reference and data entry
  • Entering data into database software, mainly Excel, and checking the accuracy for quality data input
  • Resolving discrepancies in information and obtaining further information to ensure completeness of data
  • Creating data backups as part of a contingency plan

Data Engineer

Frudata SA is a privately owned company doing economic analysis of soft fruit harvests for producers in the Western and Eastern Cape and in the Orange River and Limpopo areas.
The economic analysis includes, but is not limited to, farm production productivity and profitability, as well as expenses and income related to packing and exporting of fruit.

The Head Office of Frudata SA is in Tyger Waterfront, Tyger Valley, Cape Town and is operating with the capabilities of agricultural economists, data engineers and project coordinators and . The duties of the economists include travelling to the areas mentioned, while the duties of the data engineers and coordinators are performed at the head office.

The soft fruit harvest analyses are also referred to as surveys and are conducted per study group e.g. Citrus Western Cape study group or Citrus Eastern Cape study group or Pome Fruit study group, etc. Multiple surveys are conducted at the same time i.e. these studies overlap in time lines. About twelve or more studies are done each year, hence the volume of data to be processed and analysed requires the proficient skills of a data engineer.

While the coordinator role is key in ensuring that the activities are executed pro-actively to ensure that the surveys run and complete on time as planned, the data engineer role is focused around data processing and data analysis. The data engineer role is supportive to the economist role and integrates closely with the survey coordinator role. Both the coordinator and data engineer support the economists and work together as a team.

Activities include, but are not limited to:

  • entering data from various sources and different formats into a uniform format within one common computer system;
  • processing the data and doing verification and analysis of the data for economic purposes;
  • co-creating reports and presentations.

Data verification requires frequent interaction with the economists and a body of knowledge related to fruit farm production, packing and exporting.

The data engineer is expected to become the expert and specialist re export information.

The data engineer works with large amounts of information related to various surveys that is confidential and sensitive; it is therefore crucial critical and non-negotiable that the candidate has an aptitude for attention to detail and efficiency, while working under pressure of deadlines.
